Script for TSA Officers- Jonathan Dienst

(ANCHOR INTRO)

THIS SATURDAY WILL MARK 20 YEARS SINCE THE 9/11 ATTACKS.

THE WORST TERROR ATTACK ON AMERICAN SOIL CHANGED OUR LIVES IN MANY WAYS.

IT RESHAPED HOW WE STAY SAFE, how we TRAVEL, AND MORE.

BUT THAT ALSO HAS RAISED CONCERNS — OVER PRIVACY.

NEWS 4 CHIEF INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER JONATHAN  DIENST TAKES A CLOSER LOOK.

(DIENST/ PKG)

LONG GONE ARE PHYSICAL REMINDERS FROM THE ATTACKS ON SEPTEMBER 11TH, BUT THAT DAY 20 YEARS AGO, HAS CAST A LONG SHADOW OVER AMERICAN LIFE.

IN THE MONTHS FOLLOWING THAT DAY, THERE WAS AN UNPRECEDENTED EXPANSION OF OUR MILITARY, INTELLIGENCE POWERS AND SECURITY MEASURES….  THE TRANSPORATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION BEING THE MOST VISABLE TO ALMOST EVERY AMERICAN.

(SOT/BART JOHNSON/TSA)

“Are main job is that people and goods get to their destination safely”

TODAY MORE THAN 50-THOUSAND TSA OFFICERS IN THEIR TRADEMARK BLUE UNIFORMS, HELP EXECUTE EXTENSIVE SECURITY PROTOCOLS.

(SOT/BART JOHNSON/TSA)

“I don’t think  that’s in inconvenience, we securing people and their safety, especially when you see people wait for more than 15-20 minutes in line for a Starbucks coffee, is

CHECKING IDS.  REMOVING SHOES AND ELECTRONICS.  RESTRICTING LIQUIDS TO THREE OUNCES. AND MONTIORING FULL-BODY SCANNERS THAT CAN LEAD TO PAT DOWNS.

(nats of plane)

OUTSIDE THE AIRPORT, SITS ANOTHER NEW SECURITY ENHANCEMENT.  METAL STANCHIONS NOW LINE ENTRANCES TO THOUSANDS OF AIRPORTS, FEDERAL BUILDINGS, POLICE STATIONS, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION HUBS,  OR ANY PLACE THAT COULD SERVE AS A POSSIBLE TARGET FOR A TERRORIST ATTACK.

(SOME SORT OF NATS)

THE NATION’S DEADLIEST DAY ALSO LED TO THE LARGEST AGENCY EVER CREATED- THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY, COMBINING 22 FEDERAL DEPARTMENTS AND AGENICIES.

( SOT/ MIKE BALBONI)

4:21 on 911,  National Security became hometown security and homeland security became everybody’s responsibility, especially local law enforcement

MIKE BALBONI SERVED AS THE FIRST CHAIRMAN OF THE STATE SENATE HOMELAND SECURITY COMMITTEE.

( SOT/ MIKE BALBONI)

3:40 We have created this incredible capability to respond, practically in any city in the world, to a terrorism event. These uniformed officers now have advanced weaponry, advanced training. It’s been a very dramatic change in policing

WHILE A 9/11 STYLE ATTACK IS LESS LIKELY THESE DAYS, COUNTERTERRORISM EXPERTS WORK AROUND THE CLOCK TO PROTECT THE COUNTRY FROM BOTH FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC TERRORISM, CYBER AND BIOHAZARD ATTACKS…  ALL WHICH COULD BE DESIGNED FOR HIGH IMPACT.

( SOT/ MIKE BALBONI)

12:38 There are tremendously dangerous weapons that are out there, and we can’t account for them

WITH THE BATTLEFIELD IS CHANGING, SO TOO HAS THE TECHNOLOGY AND SURVEILLANCE.  20 YEARS AGO, WHILE SO FEW CAMERAS CAPTURED THE ATTACK, TODAY SECURITY CAMERAS CAN BE FOUND ON ALMOST EVERY CORNER.  WHETHER IT’S THE GOVERNMENT AND SO-CALLED BIG BROTHER OR PRIVATE SECURITY, ALMOST EVERY MOVEMENT IS NOW CAPTURED ON CAMERA.

4:54 Cameras on the streets.  License plates readers.  Folks who now are looking through the streetscape and saying, so where is the threat coming from, We never had that before

( SOT/ MIKE BALBONI)

SECURING THE WORKPLACE BECAME A PRIORITY TOO.  THE FREEDOM TO COME AND GO WAS ULTIMATELY REPLACED WITH ENTRY WAYS THAT REQUIRED SECURITY BADGES FOR CLEARANCE.   BUT THE ONE THING THAT REMAINS CONSTANT FOR ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT AND INDIVIVUALS… THE NEED FOR VIGILANCE.

( SOT/ MIKE BALBONI)

12:55 I don’t think there’s anybody in the intelligence world that’s gonna sit back and say there’s no chance of that ever happening.))
