TEACHERS, STAFF AND PARENTS HERE AT P.S. 169 IN SUNSET PARK HAVE BEEN LEFT SCRATCHING THEIR HEADS… ASKING HOW CAN THE CITY REOPEN THIS BUILDING TO STUDENTS WHEN COVID CASES ARE RISING…. IT COMES AS THE TEACHER’S UNION IS THREATENING TO STRIKE
PKG

THE STANDOFF BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE UNITED FEDERATION OF TEACHERS IS ONLY INTENSIFYING….
THE MAYOR VOWING TO THAT IN-PERSON LEARNING WILL RESUME ON SEPTEMBER 10TH AS PART OF A HYBRID MODEL…
11:09:06 “Educators chose the profession because they love kids and they care about kids. They need support. It cannot be done remotely. Not even slightly”

BUT UFT PRESIDENT Michael Mulgrew TELLING DAN ON THE PIX 11 MORNING NEWS- EDUCATORS WON’T GO BACK TO THE CLASSROOM UNLESS IT’S SAFE…

06:08
“Is there a date you have that you would say. Ok we’re not moving past this we’re going on strike”
“It really depends on where the mayors at if he’s going to insist that he’s going to open every school in September 10th. Then we’re looking at September 10th.
THE UNION WANTS CONSISTENT, MANDATORY TESTING IN SCHOOLS…
AND WHILE THE MAYOR HAS PLEDGED CLEANING SUPPLIES , PROMISED SCHOOLS WOULD BE DISINFECTED AND  A NURSE IN EVERY BUILDING …
THERE’S STILL NO MENTION OF MANDATORY TESTING.
AT P.S. 169 IN SUNSET PARK BROOKLYN… WHERE THERE’S BEEN A SPIKE IN COVID 19 CASES AND AN INFECTION RATE OF OVER 5 PERCENT…. THE SCHOOL’S EQUITY TEAM IS ASKING FOR APPROPRIATE SAFETY PROTOCOLS.
WRITING IN A LETTER TO THE CITY THAT AS IT STANDS…
“….sending teachers and students back to our classrooms while there is such a high rate of infection is putting an already vulnerable community further at risk….”
5:06 “We’re concerned about families getting the virus. We’re concerned about teachers getting the virus. We do go home and we also do have family. It’s not just teachers. The staff, the custodians the food staff. There’s so many people at stake here”
S/ Mayor
:48 “Now it’s time to say public servants rise to the occasion and answer the call. Just like health care workers did. Transit workers did. First responders did. Grocery workers did Public servants show up and serve people”
TAG

BUT THE TEACHER’S UNION MAKING IT CLEAR THAT THEY WILL STRIKE IF THEY FEEL IT’S UNSAFE. EVEN IF IT’S JUST ONE SCHOOL THERE MAY BE A MASS WALKOUT IN SOLIDARITY IF THE MAYOR AND THE UNION DON’T REACH A DEAL…

PEGASUS AIR.. IN A STATEMENT SAID… THE JET EXPERIENCED A “RUNWAY EXCURSION”… WHICH IS THE OFFICIAL NAME FOR SUCH INCIDENTS…

BUT THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME FOR THE LOW COST CARRIER….

JUST A MONTH AGO.. AT THIS SAME AIRPORT… ANOTHER PEGASUS JET RAN OFF THE RUNWAY INTO MUD….

THE ROOKIE… WHO SET RECORDS…FLASHED TWO THUMBS UP ON HER TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO EARTH…

  328 DAYS IN SPACE… A RECORD FOR A WOMAN…

  52 HUNDRED ORBITS…

  6 SPACEWALKS… INCLUDING THE FIRST AMERICAN ALL-WOMAN SPACEWALK…

SOT:

Interview

CK: 6:20:27 Good morning, David. // Welcome onboard the International Space Station.

WE HAD A CHANCE TO SPEAK TO KOCH…. AS SHE WAS PREPARING FOR TODAY’S RETURN…

SOT:

Interview

DK:Q: What’s been the hardest thing? Going more than 300 days in the station for you?

CK: 6:23:59 // I think the challenge is actually remaining vigilant, remembering that you really are surrounded by a hostile environment and that a single emergency or single, you know, set of string of failures could bring you into a chance where you have to exercise some of that really important training that we had on the ground. //  So just remembering how special it is here and focusing on everything that I have and not necessarily the things that aren’t in my environment.

WHAT A RIDE FOR THIS ELECTRICAL ENGINEER… WHO ONCE BUILT SPACE SCIENCE INSTRUMENTS.. AND DID RESEARCH AT THE EARTH’S POLES… BEFORE APPLYING TO BECOME AN ASTRONAUT….

NATS:

Application tape

…PART OF THE 2013 ASTRONAUT CLASS… KOCH… HAD TO LEARN TO FLY… AND TRAIN TO WALK IN SPACE…

AND FINALLY LAST YEAR… THE NOD TO FLY… ON THE RUSSIAN SOYUZ TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION.

SOT:

extension piece

DK: What was it like on the rocket? What was it like opening the hatch and getting into the station?

CK: You know, as we’re preparing to launch, it feels a lot like one of our simulation events. And then the only difference was when the countdown got to zero, we actually started moving. I looked out the window and saw the earth down below for the first time. And I actually exclaimed out loud, and my goodness, we have trained for so many years to walk into the actual reality of the space station, like the fact that it actually exists was just it was like walking into a movie set.

BUT THE STATION BECAME HER HOME…. FOR MUCH LONGER THAN EXPECTED.

NASA EXTENDING HER MISSION… GIVING HER THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE TWO RECORDS…

DURATION…. AND THIS…. THE FIRST ALL FEMALE AMERICAN SPACEWALK WITH JESSICA MEIR… FOLLOWED BY TWO MORE EXCURSIONS BY THE SAME DUO…

SOT:

Interview

CK: on that first all-female spacewalk that Jessica and I did, we were truly overwhelmed by the amount of support, by the amount of enthusiasm and by the amount of people that reached out to let us know that it did serve as inspiration to them.

// the third time around it’s already become commonplace. We recognize now that we’re doing the job the same as any of our colleagues and we’re all excelling. We all are held to the same standards, very high standards.

KOCH BROKE THE RECORD OF ASTRONAUT… PEGGY WHITSON… WHO WAS THERE FOR KOCH’S FIRST POOL SESSION ON THE GROUND.. AND SENT A MESSAGE FROM A TRAINING PLANE…

SOT:

we all know gravity sucks…

KOCH NEARLY SET THE ALL TIME RECORD FOR AMERICAN LONG DURATION FLIGHT… SHE WAS JUST 12 DAYS SHORT OF SCOTT KELLY’S TIME IN THE STATION…

SOT:

Interview

DK: , what contribution do you think you may have made to science as a scientist?

CK:  Obviously, Scott Kelly’s mission gave us one data point in that. And now this hopefully we’ll expand that by a second data point so that we can look at what sort of stayed the same, what’s different. And then in addition, the differences between women and men in that capacity, because obviously we all want to be a part of going forward for the longer duration missions that this research actually informs.

THE NORTH CAROLINA NATIVE SAYS SHE MISSED CHIPS AND SALSA THE MOST… -NO CRUNCHY FLAKEY FOODS ALLOWED ON THE STATION.

SHE SAID HER GOODBYES.. AND BOARDED THE SOYUZ TO THE FLIGHT TO EARTH….

SHE WILL REUNITE WITH HER HUSBAND… BUT TOLD US… SHE’S ALREADY THINKING OF FLYING AGAIN…

SOT:
Interview

DK: are you already thinking about the fact that you want to come back to space station?//

CK: 6:26:20  I think will I ever be back here? You know, am I saying goodbye for the last time or will I get to come back? And if so, how will it have changed? So, yes, I’m definitely thinking about those kinds of things. It’s it feels too soon, even though it has been a long time for me to not be contributing up here.  // I have had such practice and now so with a little bit of luck, I will get a chance to do a future mission.

SOT:

Interview

DK: Gravity, do you miss it, is it a good thing?

CK: 6:28:40 I only miss it when I just really want to put things down occasionally. But I’ve gotten used to Velcro and taping things down instead. So I don’t really miss it. It’s a lot more fun without it.

TONIGHT… CHRISTINA KOCH IS BACK IN GRAVITY….

SHE TELLS US FIRST ON HER THINGS TO DO LIST… IS A SWIN IN THE GULF OF MEXICO…
